Brompton bottom bracket recall

Posted on October 06 2017

Brompton UK have announced a voluntary recall of the bottom brackets in Brompton bicycles produced from April 2014 - May 2017. Brompton decided that the rate of failure of the axles in the bottom brackets (the failure rate was 0.02%) was higher than expected, and represented an unacceptable risk to riders - if the axle snaps, it may cause an accident. This is a fatigue-related failure (more common on bikes that have been ridden for longer).

How do I know if my bike is affected?
Bicycles with serial numbers from 1403284144 to 1705150001 are affected by this recall. If your bike's serial number is in this range, your bike will need the bottom bracket replaced.

You can find the serial number printed on the seat tube, just in front of the rear wheel (you can read it more easily when the rear wheel is folded under).

Do I need to buy a new bottom bracket?
No you don't - Brompton are sending replacement bottom brackets out to us, and we will fit them free of charge. This is the case even if you didn't purchase your Brompton from us.

What should I do?
We're expecting to receive the replacement bottom brackets on Thursday 19th October. You can book in to have your bottom bracket replaced using the below online form. Replacement will take about half an hour.

If you would like to book in for a service at the same time as having your bottom bracket replaced, please don't fill in the form below, but instead give us a call on (02) 8014 4228.

Update 31/10: We have exhausted our initial allocation of replacement bottom brackets, and are waiting for more to arrive. This is a voluntary recall so there is no particular rush - please get in touch if you would like us to call you when we have more bottom brackets.
