Mittagong to Wombeyan Caves and return
Suggested duration: 2 days
Notes: There are stoves and kettles in the amenities block at the Wombeyan Caves campground, so if you're staying there you won't need to carry one. You can also hire a cabin, so you don't even need a tent.
Day 1 (65km)
Catch the train to Mittagong station. Ride north-west on the Old Hume Highway (exercise caution as it can be busy, and the shoulder disappears in parts) and then turn right onto Wombeyan Caves Rd.
The road turns to dirt about 20km in, and while it's generally in good condition, there are some corrugated sections.
After passing through a rock tunnel, and past some more farmland, you'll start a long descent to the Wollondilly River. It's narrow so be careful around blind corners. From the bottom there's a long climb with incredible scenery, and a short descent to Wombeyan Caves.
If you want to shorten your trip, there's a campground and caravan park next to the Wollondilly. However it really is a spectacular climb, and the descent the next day is even better!
Day 2 (65km)
Return the way you came.
Alternative second day
Continue along Wombeyan Caves Rd towards Goulburn. Turn left onto Richlands Rd. You can either:
- follow this all the way into Goulburn (78km from Wombeyan Caves, mostly sealed road)
- turn left in Taralga onto Goodhill Lane, which becomes Walsh St and then Hanworth Rd, and follow this down to Marulan (90km from Wombeyan Caves, some 4WD track)
Trains are much less frequent from Goulburn and Marulan than they are from Mittagong, so check the timetable before you decide to take the alternate route.
